Best Autumn Picnic Foods

Honestly, I find summer picnics a bit overrated. I’m a much bigger fan of picnics in the fall. There are quite a few reasons for me personally; my favorite is that all the bugs have started to die and you don’t need to worry about ants and wasps invading the delicious food that you’ve packed. Fall is the season to bring those sweet, sticky foods out that you wouldn’t dare take on a picnic in the summer. The other reason is the nice temperate and lower sunlight. Usually the days are a bit less bright and intense, so you can actually enjoy being out the sun without being fried completely. Here are a few of my favorite recipes for your autumn picnic!

Cold Chicken

This may be cheating a little bit, but it is my very favorite picnic food. If you make a roast chicken for dinner, make more than you planned to. That way, you have enough to save for the next day and have some delicious cold chicken. Cold chicken goes well in sandwiches or by itself; it’s one of the most versatile picnic foods I know of! It’s also easy to make, and if you want to make it even easier just grab a roast chicken from the store and use that.

Hot Toddy

This mix of rum and warm water and spices is the perfect autumn drink. It keeps you warm, and it is great for fall nights. I love to get out my telescope (I got it from LikeHubble.com!) and watch the stars while we have a drink. It’s the perfect adult beverage for stargazers on a chilly night.

Chili

Chili is really easy to make, and it keeps warm very well in a thermal container. You can just bring a big container of chili along and a few bowls and you’re good to go! It is also great for keeping you warm, and goes great with cider or Oktoberfest Marzan ales. Which, speaking of…

Marzan Ale

Marzan ale is an ale brewed in March in Germany, and is kept in storage until Oktoberfest. And let me tell you, there is NOTHING that tastes quite as good as an Oktoberfest ale. It has a unique, nutty flavor that you won’t get from Bud Light or MillerCoors. It goes well with every meal under the planet; it’s especially great for chili and cold chicken, which is why I’ve added it to the list. Heck, it’s great by itself; I was birdwatching with the telescope I just bought, and had a delicious mug of foamy beer to go with it!

So, if you like beer, rum, chili, cold chicken, or cider, autumn is the season for you. It’s my very favorite season of the year, and food is a big part of that. I’m always sad when October is over, because that means that the Oktoberfest ale starts to run dry and I’ll have to wait until next year.

10 Best Kept Secrets for Grilling Your Steak to Perfection!

10 Best Kept Secrets for Grilling Your Steak to Perfection!

Perhaps the most difficult dish to perfect in the griller’s repertoire is the great steak. Creating a perfectly cooked, moist, and tender steak, with just the right amount of juice, flavor and burnt parts, is the griller’s pinnacle of achievement. I’ve been invited to several food fests and have discovered some very helpful rules for the perfect grilled steak.

Here are some tips on how to grill your best steak:

  1. Let the steak warm up.

Before even thinking of lighting up your grill or smoker, whichever model you find here at https://smokeysteakranch.com/, make sure that the stake is at room temperature for at least one hour. Try grilling a steak directly taken out from the fridge and you’ll end up disappointed.

  1. Right thickness.

For best results, your steak should be at least one-and-a-half to two inches thick. That’s not some random measurement. This thickness will help you achieve the ideal char on the exterior and the desired temperature on the inside.

  1. Salt from start to end.

Lightly sprinkle with salt both sides of the steak few hours before grilling. Place it on a wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet. Salt ensures that your steak is juicy by helping it retain water. Right before grilling, pat dry the steak with paper towels and sprinkle with salt again. I recommend kosher salt for better result. And finally after grilling, sprinkle the steak again with just enough salt.

  1. 10 Best Kept Secrets for Grilling Your Steak to Perfectio-1Pepper for crunch and spice.

Add some spice and crunch to your steak with a combination of different sizes of peppers – fine, medium and large bits. Place whole peppercorns on a plastic bag and crush them to pieces.

  1. Simple seasoning.

You don’t have to overdo on seasoning. Usually, the best steaks are achieved by simply using coarse salt and pepper. No extra seasoning or secrets.

  1. Keep it hot and lubricated.

You don’t have to own any pricey fancy pellet smokers to create a great steak. You just need grill grate that is hot, well-oiled, and clean. That should be enough to prevent sticking as well as gives your steak killer grill marks.

  1. Achieve mouthwatering marks.

For a picture-perfect grilled steak, arrange slightly on diagonal to the bars of the grate so the char would all run the same way. Carefully rotate the steak after 2-3 minutes to create a crosshatch of grill marks.

  1. Turn the steak.

Avoid stabbing the steak, instead, use tongs to turn the steaks. You only stab the steak to drain out some juices. And surely, you don’t want it to dry up. A good indicator that it’s time to turn the steak is the beads of blood that form on top of it.

  1. Poke the steak.

Test how well done your steak is by poking the steak with your index finger. If it’s firm and springy that’s well done; gently yielding, medium-rare; squishy and soft, rare. That way, you’ll know when to take it off from the grill.

  1. Let your steak sit.

Give your steak 5-10 minutes to settle and spread its juices. As the temperature evens, the meat reaches its final tenderness. Don’t get too excited, let time work its wonder on your great steak! Once done, cut it to your desired sizes and give it a nice presentation.

Finally, don’t leave your grill unclean!

Always keep your grill clean – that’s your key to achieving the best grilled steaks in the future!

Why Growing Your Own Food Is Awesome

Why Growing Your Own Food Is Awesome

You all know how much I love food, and you’re probably aware of some reasons why food is important and how it affects us. But do you know what kind of benefits you can get from growing it by yourself? I started doubting this the last couple of times when I talked to some of my friends about this. Although it seems pretty straight-forward to me, they just couldn’t, or wouldn’t, understand what I was trying to say. This is why I’ve decided to introduce my readers to some of the greatest benefits of growing organic food. I hope you enjoy reading them!

Growing your own food lets you choose what you’ll eat

This is probably the biggest benefit that you’ll get from it during your own lifetime. When you grow your own food, you’re the one deciding what you’ll eat, as well as the one in control of how the food is going to be treated and processed. Just think of all the things that are listed as ingredients on the packages of food you usually buy, and try to realize how much you don’t know about them. So wouldn’t it be great if you knew what you were eating all the time?

It makes the food you eat tastier

having a food garden at home will prove to be beneficial longtermkThis is something my friends simply refused to believe. It’s probably because organic food is expensive and they haven’t tried much of it. But it’s true. For example, I have an apple tree that requires some care. I need to test the soil every now and then, and make sure it gets enough water. I even have to prune it, which would be a difficult task if I didn’t have a quality pole saw, a gadget that allows you to cut the branches without much effort. But it pays off, because when I make an apple pie with the apples I picked from my own tree, the taste is divine! It makes a world of difference!

It saves money in the long run

Yes, you’ll need to invest in your garden if you want things to grow in it. That’s the main argument people use when they start talking against growing your own food. But once your fruit and vegetables start growing, believe me, the cost becomes so low that you’ll definitely notice the difference.

It also saves energy

Factories that are in the business of producing food have become quite large, and thus spend a lot of energy. Growing your own food, on the other hand, is something that can be done with minimum waste. Apart from saving energy, keeping your own garden will make you want to use everything that can be used, and in that way reduce the amount of biological waste.

It protects the Earth

In the long run, this way of living is what significantly reduces the amount of damage we do to our own planet, and isn’t that something we should be striving towards? So if you think ecology is important, the best way to contribute is by growing your own food.

Mothers & Their Food

Mothers & Their Food

It’s said that when the world was created God was busy with the expansion of the universe. He was too busy looking after different projects that he had in hand.  He had to supervise the big bang and also had to relocate the different landmasses after Pangaea was fragmented. So to take care of the well being of the lives He had started creating He made mothers. Since then, from the unicellular bacteria to the highly advanced intellectual species of Homo sapiens, none can live without the one sole thing, a mother.

Like mothers their foods are too adorable and come in a wide variety of options. No matter how much tired she is a mother is always ready to walk that extra mile to cook for you your favorite dish and that too with all her heart that every time tastes much better that it was last time. How can one do that?

Cooking comes as an in built function in mothers. It’s like those previously installed applications in your smart phones and gadgets that make you save the effort of finding them on the net and downloading them and installing them, and thus make our lives easier. Mothers love cooking. It is like their holy grail is hidden somewhere in the kitchen and they have discovered it. They would not just leave that place.

Food cooked by mothers seems to have some magic in them. It is more like a potion than just home cooked same old recipe that can cure all that is touched by evil in the world and beyond. Simple lemonade by your mom can relief you from the long hours when you were out in the sun hovering with your newly acquired long board featured at LongBoardMafia. Or a pie or a pudding can be a real treat for you and a big bribe for your pals when you want to be the captain of the soccer team. It just works fine with them all.

Home cooked food is also making good business in different parts of the world, and this is no joke as it is turning to be a very profitable venture. Take for instance, in India during lunch hours instead of going to the nearest food stations office goers prefer home cooked food and the business is flourishing. The people in the business are stressing that their product is made the way the mothers cook for you at home. And this is actually gaining many takers, especially those who travel and settle away from their homes for their job.

It is a mystery how one single person can look after all that is needed to be done at home, and that too in such an organized fashion. Though technology has advanced to give us some fabulous time saving appliances, yet it’s a hat off to the remarkable skill of the mothers in managing the one toughest organization in the world, or rather the whole universe, that is a family.

Food Classics That Will Never Go Out of Style

Food Classics That Will Never Go Out of Style

Everyone has their one favorite meal that would they would love to eat every day if given the chance, though it should be mentioned that if most of these people were granted their wish, their favorite food would soon turn into the worst thing you could give them after a period of time. What a lot of people do not realize is that the human taste buds is different from that of most other animals in that it needs a variety of flavors to satisfy its palette.

This is why it is actually possible for an individual to get sick of what is seen as crowd favorites such as ice cream and chocolates after consuming them on a regular basis for a long period of time. Of course in circumstances like that just mentioned it is probably a good thing with regard to the health factors involved. One might have to keep a microdermabrasion machine in a bid to maintain any semblance of smooth skin after such a diet.

However there are certain food categories that can be considered to be classics in the food world and these include junk food as well. The inclusion of some snacks under the junk food category is due to the fact that a more realistic compilation consists of ALL the things that are liked by a majority of the people in that area. Including the foods that are not that advisable to like as well. In order to be listed as a classic, the foods mentioned had to be popular not only around the country, but on a global scale. And they had to be really loved by people – one of them was the reason my friend went online looking for an efficient way to treat her bad complexion (here is what she found). Some of these foods include:

French Fries

French fries do not hold the most nutritious value in their ingredients but their popularity has been gaining traction since the introduction of the knife to potatoes and it has not seemed like easing up ever since. The concept of fried potatoes drained in a pool of ketchup has been experienced by a majority of people at one point or the other and a good number of people still continue to enjoy this crispy treat today. It should be noted that a highly regular diet of these fries could be harmful to one’s health if their consumption is not kept in check.

Peanut Butter and Jelly

This will always be the most famous sandwich made by mothers all over the world. Unlike French fries which is usually deep fried in oil destroying any hope of nutrition, the making of peanut butter and jelly does not have such an eradicating effect on its nutritional value and act as a good supplement for an active child during the day.

Macaroni and Cheese

This is another combination that might not quite be on the healthy side but is a popular dish nonetheless. The main attraction for most people when it comes to Macaroni and Cheese is the fact that it is not a complicated dish and only takes a short time to prepare.
